C.S. Lewis "Cross and Crown" 100% Organic Cotton Canvas Tote Bag
Hello, Friend!
If you have been perusing this website, you may then know that I am a wee wren! And this wren loves C.S. Lewis!
My best human friend, Eleanor, and I agree that the essay titled “The Weight of Glory” perfectly describes that deep ache and longing all of Creation possesses from even very young and innocent years. Eleanor said she always felt that the memory of Eden was somehow inherited and so, deep within ourselves, we know.
We may have forgotten, and so many simply cease to believe at all, even though the ache is still there. They try to explain it away. Lewis says that we “take [our] revenge on it by calling it names like Nostalgia and Romanticism and Adolescence…” Even worse, I say, is the scientific explanations that remove all meaning from it. So, you might be able to satisfy or assuage the old ache with worldly successess, entertainment, and pleasure. And those things, though not always bad in themselves, will not ultimately bring us into the presence of Joy. We may try to forget, but deep inside…as G.K. Chesterton writes, we sometimes “remember that we forget.”
Don’t ignore the ache. It is, after all, a messenger:
The creation waits eagerly for the sons of God to be revealed; 20 for the creation was made subject to frustration — not willingly, but because of the one who subjected it. But it was given a reliable hope 21 that it too would be set free from its bondage to decay and would enjoy the freedom accompanying the glory that God’s children will have. 22 We know that until now, the whole creation has been groaning as with the pains of childbirth; 23 and not only it, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we continue waiting eagerly to be made sons — that is, to have our whole bodies redeemed and set free. -Romans 8:19-23
Be filled with hope,
