Eleanor and I dearly love C.S. Lewis! This particular quote come from his book titled Mere Christianity. He deals with this theme in other writings , such as The Weight of Glory and even illustrates it in his beloved Narnia Chronicles. He describes it as “that old ache,” and says we take our “revenge” on it by calling it “Nostalgia and Romanticism and Adolescence.” Wordsworth, he says in “The Weight of Glory” essay tried to attach it to moments in the past. However, even if you traveled back to the past, a subject I know a bit about, you would find that you would yet be seeking the Source of this still, small voice, which draws you on.
Eleanor tells me that she always felt that the memory of Eden still existed deep within the human heart. I have much more to say about that, but for now, read these books by Lewis if you haven’t already! I painted the lamppost from Narnia in watercolor, myself!
