Allow me to introduce you to my friend Leonardo the Rat!

He tells me that he gets comments about his name, which is an Italian name meaning "lion-hearted!" You may wonder why his mother named him this, since they are rats. And not just any rats, but Chicago rats from the 1930's! Yes, that's right, Leo, as we call him, was born in 1936! So, as you are probably aware, things were tough in those days, as the Great Depression was in full swing. Leo says that his mother instilled the belief that one day all of Creation "will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God" (Romans 8:21). That is why Leo's favorite verses are the lovely words of St. Paul from this passage of Romans 8.

Leonardo also loves his Tolkien! And this bit that the good professor wrote really resonates with my friend. And I am sure you can see why. So many nights, Leo's belly rumbled with hunger, and the chilly Chicago wind pierced his threadbare coat. However, he always remembered that his longing for something warm and beautiful and good cannot soley come from any worldly goods or success. Those things, such as a warm fire in the hearth, a beautiful story or piece of artwork or music, and a fiery sunset all speak to a place we have yet to see. They are little hints. This world is corrupted, no mistake, but a renewed world will come. Our "sense of exile" tells us so. And our Creator confirmed it with the words of his Son.
Stay hopeful, seek what is good and true, and never give up!
