Micah 6:8 "Justice and Mercy" 100% Organic Cotton Canvas Tote Bag
Hello, Friend!
You may be here because you love the Bible verse on this tote bag as much as I do! If you haven’t read my wee musings on this lovely passage, please keep reading!
Now, about the scripture on this tote bag.
I love this passage because of how it neatly sums up how our lives should look if we are walking with Adonai (The Lord). And it is exactly that! However, when I read the whole chapter, I realized that He was disciplining the original audience. As I read, I thought to myself, “we should all read the whole chapter and take it into our hearts and humbly learn. This could be us!”
The people were not living in ways pleasing to the Lord even though He had continually intructed them on what is good. He was telling them that they should already know this, yet, they were living corrupted lives. The previous verses are questions that seem almost facetious as the people ask what God wants from them. They ask (through Micah) if the Lord would be satisfied with thousands of rams, ten thousand rivers of olive oil, and even their firstborn to pay for their transgressions!(I found that last bit particularly interesting since God Himself, the Creator and King of the Universe, would in fact offer his firstborn for that very purpose).
It appears to me that they were, on the surface, performing all the rituals, but their hearts were corrupted with hypocrisy, greed, deceit, and violence. As I read, I am reminded of Matthew 23, when Yeshua (Jesus) administers a bit of strong medicine, shall we say, to the Pharisees of his day, seven centuries later.
I can imagine that some who heard his rebuke took their medicine, but we do know that many spit it out. They weren’t interested in being just, merciful, or humble with God. A pure heart is a humble heart. I don’t think there is any way around that. Tragically, pride kept them from the Truth, which could have freed them from the prisons they had created for themselves.
St. Paul tells his readers in Romans 11 to avoid being arrogant because anyone can be susceptible to the same pride that caused some to reject the Truth. So, now, when I read this scripture, though I do love its beauty and truth, I hear the faint echo of a warning.
Well, I am but a wee wren; however, I do muse over these things! There are Bible scholars out there that, I am sure, could really dig out some meat from these passages. Nevertheless, I do enjoy having a go at it myself. I love reading the words of truth, even if I don’t quite understand them…yet. So, even if you don’t exactly get it either, friend, just keep reading and praying and reading some more! Seek and you shall find!
Blessings!!
