And we are ALL writers, are we not?

C.S. Lewis is said to have disliked the noise and distraction of the typewriter, which was advanced technology in his day! What would he think of laptops, cell phones, and the internet? Well, he relished the rhythm and silence his pen and inkwell afforded him. I am inclined to agree with Lewis in that regard. Technology offers many conveniences and much more; however, there is sometimes a cost we don’t consider. Noise is one that looms quite large.

Our modern world is quite noisy. And you do not have to live in a big city to experience noise. Just pick up your cell phone and click on any social media or news app. From the television, video games, and media, I always feel like they are screaming at me!

One of many remedies for dealing with noise is—writing. And I mean actually putting pen to paper, friend. Find a quiet and cozy nook and light a candle. Sip on some tea or coffee and let your thoughts flow. Sitting outside is also a lovely way to write, if you can find a quiet spot in a park or in your own back garden! Allow my friends to sing to you as you write. They are glad to do it, as their Creator gave them a gift they use readily and with pleasure. You can do the same!

Use your gifts! No matter what your gift is, or if you’re not quite sure, ask the Heavenly Father to show you. You can write to Him! I believe it pleases our Creator when we write to Him. So write your prayers to Him. Writing them may help clear your thoughts. The quietness of writing is really a discipline. It slows you down, so you can really consider deeply what you are thinking and feeling (and the difference between those two actions).

Additionally, there are many other things you can write, whether it’s stories, contemplative journaling, commonplacing, Bible study notes, or brainstorming about your next project.

So, whether you use a beautifully crafted journal or stationery, a sketch pad with your own beautiful illustrations, or a spiral ring notebook from the local five and dime, just write!

I, like Lewis, love to use a pen and ink. It’s challenging for a wee wren, but I am practicing and having a grand time! And sometimes making a grand mess! But even if you’d prefer writing on your laptop or a mint green vintage typewriter, just do it!

And if you need a shirt or a tote bag to remind you, you know where to get them! ;-)

Happy scribbling!
