C.S. Lewis "Watchful Dragons" Glass Tumbler

$26.00

Hello, friend!

If you’re familiar with Ddriag the Good, you may have already read about what inspired me to paint this watercolor picture of him. If not, keep reading below! :-)

You are very likely here because you either love C.S.Lewis as much as I do, or you love fairy tales and dragons and all those sorts of things! Well, Lewis did say that one day we would “be old enough to read fairy tales again.” And we may realize in the reading that they have much more to say about Life and Truth than we ever dreamed.

The quote on this shirt is from the essay titled “Sometimes Fairy Stories May Say Best What’s To Be Said.” If you haven’t read this essay, you can find it in Of Other Worlds, a collection of essays and stories by Lewis.

You were created with an imagination for a reason. So, it’s reasonable that your Creator intends for you to use your imagination to understand Him and his ways better. Your imagination can help you recognize truth, appreciate beauty, and practice what is good.

Sometimes, the world hides or distorts truth, beauty, and goodness in an attempt to hide their Maker. Our experiences in thsi world can be used to give rise to mental dragons that guard against the real treasure. These dragons breathe the fire of bad memories, major disappointments, biases and judgmentalism (based on a worldly mindset), a misguided *education, and other challenges that can wear us down and make us doubtful, even cynical. We may even associate these negative experiences and thoughts with the One who can free us from them.

The good news is that we can “steal past those watchful dragons!” G.K. Chesterton wisely writes that “Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.”

So, don’t give up, Friend! Keep fighting “the good fight of faith,” as St. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:12. More will be revealed!

I was inspired by the dragon paintings by J.R.R. Tolkien, one of which you can find on the cover of his translation ofBeowulf.

*Read The Abolition of Man by C.S. Lewis.

My friend Ddraig (pronounced a bit like “Thryg” with a rolled r) posed for the watercolor illustration featured on this glass tumbler. Ddraig is one of the few good dragons left in the world, but he understands that, sadly, his kind have worked hard to give dragons an evil reputation. He desired to be a part of my project because he believes in redemption. He wants to encourage all to seek the good path. His favorite Bible verse is 2 Peter 3:9, which states, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

A wee bit of trivia about Ddraig: Ddraig loves iced coffee! No, it won’t extinguish his fire, contrary to popular belief! :-D He prefers, unsurprisingly, dark-roasted coffee with burnt sugar syrup and cream. He loves how it looks like smoke in the glass too!

Have a beautiful day!
