Hello, friend!

In case you haven’t read my thoughts about this C.S. Lewis quote already (I do repeat myself a lot. It’s a wren thing), I am reposting them below. This little mug is great for the child (or chick) inside all of us! And it comes in several beautiful colors to choose from. Make some hot cocoa and sit down with a good fairy tale! Read below for more on that subject: ;-)

C.S. Lewis said that one day we would “be old enough to read fairy tales again.” And I think we may realize in the reading that they have much more to say about life and truth than we ever dreamed.

The quote on this shirt is from the essay titled “Sometimes Fairy Stories May Say Best What’s To Be Said.” If you haven’t read this essay, you can find it in the book titled Of Other Worlds, a collection of essays and stories by Lewis.

You were created with an imagination for a reason. So, it is reasonable that your Creator intends for you to use your imagination to understand Him and his ways better. Your imagination can help you recognize truth, appreciate beauty, and practice what is good.

Sometimes, the world hides or distorts truth, beauty, and goodness in an attempt to hide their Maker. Our experiences in this world can be used to give rise to mental dragons that guard against the real treasure. These dragons breathe the fire of bad memories, major disappointments, biases and judgmentalism (based on a worldly mindset), a misguided *education, media toxicity, and other challenges that can wear us down and make us doubtful, even cynical. We may even associate these negative experiences and thoughts with the One who can free us from them.

The good news is that you can “steal past those watchful dragons!” G.K. Chesterton wisely writes that “Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.”

So, don’t give up, Friend! Keep fighting “the good fight of faith,” as St. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:12. More will be revealed!

I want to thank my friend, Ddraig (prounounced a bit like “thryg” with a rolled r), for posing for the watercolor illustration featured here. Ddraig is one of the few good dragons left in the world, but he understands that, sadly, his kind have worked hard to give dragons an evil reputation. He desires to be a part of my project because he believes in redemption. He wants to encourage all to seek the good path. His favorite Bible verse is 2 Peter 3:9, which states, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

When painting Ddraig, I was inspired by the dragon paintings by J.R.R. Tolkien, one of which you can find on the cover of his translation of Beowulf.

Have a beautiful day!
