Lewis here writes of his first encounter with George MacDonald. On a cool October evening in a train station bookstall, he happens upon Phantastes (or perhaps the tattered old book was placed there just for him). He describes the moment so that you can almost feel the cold, crisp air and smell the smoke of the engine. A breeze stirs Autumn leaves. You hold your breath as the young Lewis, his train just arriving, picks the book out and makes his purchase.
This one decision would change everything!
He writes:
It was as if I were carried sleeping across the frontier, or as if I had died in the old country and could never remember how I came alive in the new. I met all that had charmed me in Malory, Spenser, Morris, and Yeats. But in another sense all was changed. I did not yet know (and I was long in learning) the name of the new quality, the bright shadow, that rested on the travels of Anodos. I do now. It was Holiness.
Friend, I hope you have read some of this worthy man’s writings. Though, MacDonald would probably respond that only One is worthy! That would be just like him, I think.
