C.S.Lewis "Watchful Dragons" Cotton Canvas Tote Bag
Hello there!
You are very likely here because you either love C.S.Lewis as much as I do, or you love fairy tales and dragons and all that sort of thing! Well, Lewis did say that one day we would “be old enough to read fairy tales again.” And we may realize in the reading that they have much more to say about life and truth than we ever dreamed.
If you’ve been perusing my website, you may have already read my thoughts on this subject. If not, keep reading! :-D
The quote on this shirt is from the essay titled “Sometimes Fairy Stories May Say Best What’s To Be Said.” If you haven’t read this essay, you can find it in the book titled Of Other Worlds, a collection of essays and stories by Lewis.
You were created with an imagination for a reason. So, it’s reasonable that your Creator intends for you to use your imagination to understand Him and his ways better. Your imagination can help you recognize truth, appreciate beauty, and practice what is good, all while falling in love with their Source.
Sometimes, the world hides or distorts truth, beauty, and goodness in an attempt to hide their Maker. Our own experiences can give birth to mental dragons that guard against the real treasure. These dragons breathe the fire of bad memories, major disappointments, biases and judgmentalism (based on worldly mindsets), a *misguided education, and other challenges that can wear us down, make us bitter, and even associate these negative experiences and thoughts with the One who can free us from them.
The good news is that we can “steal past those watchful dragons!” G.K. Chesterton wisely writes that “Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.”
So, don’t give up, Friend! Keep fighting “the good fight of faith,” as St. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:12. More will be revealed!
I want to thank my friend, Ddraig (pronounced a bit like “Thryg” with a rolled r), for posing for the watercolor illustration featured on this piece. Ddraig is one of the few good dragons left in the world, but he understands that, sadly, his kind have worked hard to give dragons an evil reputation. He desired to be a part of my project because he believes in redemption. He wants to encourage all to seek the good path. His favorite bible verse is 2 Peter 3:9, which states, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
I was inspired by the dragon paintings of J.R.R. Tolkien, one of which you can find on the cover of his translation of Beowulf.
Have a beautiful day!
Nora Lamar
