C.S. Lewis Watchful Dragons T-Shirt for Kiddos
You were created with an imagination for a reason. So, it’s reasonable that your Creator intends for you to use your imagination to understand Him and his ways better. Your imagination can help you recognize truth, appreciate beauty, and practice what is good, especially if you’re a kiddo!
In Mark 10:13-16, Jesus tells all the adults in the crowd that they need to be more like children. The older we grow, the more worldly we become, which I realize is not news to you, patient reader. We can easily observe in ourselves and in others, even followers of the Way, a certain cynicism, judgmentalism (the worldy kind), snobbery, jealousy, covetousness, greed and materialism, a desire to impress others with our wealth, education, and other accomplishments, and being hard on those who seem less accomplished. These are just a few of the defects grown-ups tend to embrace if not careful.
And it starts in our youth, so beware! None are immune; however, little children are less inclined to such hypocrisies and ugliness. They also tend to trust their parents and other grown-up loved ones. They want to love and be loved. The Creator seeks such as these as Jesus has plainly stated.
Another important child-like quality is the acceptance and enjoyment of their God-given imagination. Grown-ups often lose touch with their imagination, or they allow it to manifest in unhealthy ways. Imagination is a tool, so it can be abused. We, like children, can use our individual imaginations for the Good. As C.S. Lewis suggests in the *essay from which this quote is taken, sometimes fairy-tales are the best way to illustrate truth. Our imagination is a language that dives deep, much deeper than our reason, useful though our reason is.
Kiddos get this.
G.K. Chesterton wisely writes that “Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.”
Grown-ups need to understand this as well.
So, don’t give up, Friend! Keep fighting “the good fight of faith,” as St. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:12. More will be revealed!
*The quote on this shirt is from the essay titled “Sometimes Fairy Stories May Say Best What’s To Be Said.” If you haven’t read this essay, you can find it in Of Other Worlds, a collection of essays and stories by Lewis.
P.S. There is a grown-up t-shirt as well, which you may have seen. I wanted the kiddos to be able to have one too, since they are purveyors of imaginative arts! :-D
I want to thank my friend, **Ddraig, for posing for the watercolor illustration featured on this shirt. Ddraig is one of the few good dragons left in the world, but he understands that, sadly, his kind have worked hard to give dragons an evil reputation. He desired to be a part of my project because he believes in redemption. He wants to encourage all to seek the good path. His favorite Bible verse is 2 Peter 3:9, which states, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
When I painted this picture of Ddraig, I was inspired by the dragon paintings by J.R.R. Tolkien, one of which you can find on the cover of his translation of Beowulf.
**Ddraig is pronounced a bit like “Thryg” with a rolled r. He is an ancient Welsh dragon. More on that subject later! ;-)
Have a beautiful day!
